CAPTURE OF THE ESCAPEDMAORI.

Early this morning a man entered the shopof Mrs Warne, at Lyttelton, getting in at a window. Mrs W T arne heard and ca led out, apparently to waken someone in the nextroom, when the intruder unlocked the street door and ran off. He was not seen, bat is supposed to be the Maori who escaped from. Addington Gaol, as for two or three evenings lately a Maori purchased articles of food at the shop. Once be tendered a £1 note on the Union Bank, on which bank the notes were which were stolen from Harveyand Palmer’s shop the day after the Maori's escape. The police are scouring the hills. Later. Constables Drake and McCormick were sent to search the hills between Lyttelton and Heathoote. They reached Ruapaki Pahearly in the afternoon, and made inquiries among the Maoris, who denied having seen the fugitive. They were just about to leave the village when they saw two Maoris coming down the hill, one of whom they recognised as the escaped prisoner. When about 200 yards off he recognised them, and ran along Governor’s Bay road. They gave chase, together with a Maori named Mamo. The fugitive, finding they were gaining on him, stopped and picked up two large stones and threw them at McCormack, missing him. McCormack closed with the Maori, who straggled fiercely, making his teeth almost meet in the constable’s left cheek. Drake and Momo came to bis assistance, and the prisoner was overpowered. Five silk handkerchiefs, a quantity of tobacco, and 22s 4d in cash, was found on him. Be wore a coat, trousers,

and hat, which were identified as having been taken from Harvey and Palmer's shop, Ha stated he had gone to Papanui on the morning of his escape, on last Monday week, ■where he had dinner at the hotel. He went to Kaiapoi, and hid in the bush there till Thursday,when he returned to Christchurch, and had been for a week sleeping with Chinese. He denied having been m Lyt. tel ton.
