FEARFUL ATROCITIES IN NEW GUINEA.

News is to hand of a fearful atrocity committed by the New Guinea Natives. It appears that the Okrika Natives lured a hostile tribe called the Ogonis into their territory, and after a mock discussion set upon and overpowered them, killing 150. The Okrika afterward cooked and ate the bodies of their victims. The British resident, with an armed party, rescued 10 captives, and restored order. The chief offenders were heavily fined.

London, October 31

The Earl of Carnarvon delivered a lecture at his country seat, Netvbury, on the subject of his recent tour in Australia. He referred in laudatory terms to the energy of the colonists and the force of the Australian charac ter, and said the absence of pauperism is one of the most noticeable features of the colonies. The method of dealing with public lands also came in for warm praise from the speaker, who expressed bis admiration of the laud transfer system. Referring to fiscal policy in the colonies, he said the colonists were largely in favour of protection.

A conference was held to-day between the coalowners and the miners out on strike, when an advance was made in the direction of a settlement of the difficulty, and the outlook is now more hopeful.
