Christchurch, October 31
At a meeting of the Council of the Acclimatisation Society to. day, a discussion took place on the question of issuing licenses to sell trout. The Society has declined to do this on the ground that, to permit the sale of trout now, would probably lead to the flsh being almost exterminated. It was stated that the Lake Ellesmere fishermen could not help large quantities of trout being caught in their nets, and it conld not be expected they would throw these away. Ultimately the Council decided to offer a reward of £3, in addition to a similar reward offered by the Anglers’ Society, for conviction for illegally selling trout. The Industrial Association to-night elected J. Langdown, A, W. Beaven, E. O. Ashby, and Crook to represent the Association at the Melbourne Freetrade Congress. Considerable interest is being taken in musical circles here in the action of the Christchurch Musical Society in regard to their production of Handel’s Messiah in the Christmas week. They have obtained the co-operation .of the members of the Orchestral Society, and of most of the church choirs in Christchurch, and have taken the Falaoe Skating Rink, reputed to be the largest building in the Colony, for the performance. Timaru, October 31.
The twenty.third show of the Timaru A. and P. Association was held yesterday and to-day, at which between £SOO and £6OO was offered in prizes. The entries totalled 72. There was a good show of sheep, bat the competition was limited. The New Zealand and Australian Land Company (Level’s Estate) obtained the most points in merinos and all classes of sheep; A. M. Clark in English, A. Murdoch in Border Leicesters, and Bruce and McLaren in Lincolns. There was a very poor show of cattle. The main feature of this show was horses, of which there were 14S entries. The champion draught was Davies’ Marquis of Salisbury ; champion thoroughbred, Guy Paux. Roadsters and hunters turned up in large numbers. But for two North Canterbury breeders, the show of pigs would have been a dead failure. The good prizes brought a good entry-list of dairy produce, but a similar inducement did not secure a show of grain. There was practically only one competitor. The Association offered no piizea for implements or machinery; but a good collection was shown, including about a dozen different makes of binders. The Timaru Woollen Factory had ■n excellent collection of their fabrics on the ground. Dunedin, October 31. It is decided to make the Exhibition intercolonial.
