AUCKLAND RACES. ArcKJLOfP, January 2. The Auckland Racing Club’s Summer Meeting was continued to day. The weather was fine, and the attendance good, being much better than on the Derby day. Admiral Fairfax and officers of the squadron were present during the day. The racing was excellent throughout, though good finishes were few, Nelson’s victory in the Cup was a hollow one, but though the result of the race was a foregone conclusion, other horses beside the favorite carried a share of public money, notably Sextant and Clogs, the former being well supported on the strength of the good work performed during the week on the training ground. At the conclusion of the Selling Race a hostile i -demonstration was made by a section of I

the public, who asserted that one of the ( horses competing in that event had been I pulled, but in> serious results ensued, the 1 police quieting the disturbance. The following are the results : New Year’s Hurdle Race, of, 100 sovs; two miles. Mr W. 11. Tathain s Uranus, aged, list (Trewin), 1 ; Mr J. If. Williamson’s Shillelagh, Ost (J. Laing), 2 ; Mr W. K. The Selling Rage, 50 sovs, was won by Mr W. R. Carter’s Rewi, 7st 01b, who beat five others.

Auckland Cup, of 750 sovs, added to a sweep of 10 sovs each ; two and a quarter miles.—Major George’s Nelson, Ost 121 b (Brown), 1; Mr J. Leonard's Clogs, 7st 81b (Taylor), 2; MrG. G. Stead’s Sextant, 7stl2lb (Clifford), 3. Victoria, Friendship, Cannon, and Leorina also ran. The betting was 2 to 1 on Nelson. After one break away, Mr Stephens despatched the field to a splendid start. The colors of Friendship were first to become conspicuous, and the most prominent of the others were Sextant and Cannon, Nelson occupying the position of hugging the rails, being next, with Victoria on terms, whilst Clogs and Leorina were the last. Friendship pulling double led Cannon a length round the lower turn, the other positions being unaltered, but a little further on Friendship surrendered the lead to Cannon, and here a shout went up as Leorina stumbled and fell, dislodging her jockey. The filly going on riderless accompanied the field for the remainder of the distance. Cannon and Clogs raced on terras through the cutting, and as the field swept past the half-mile post they wbre still rnnning in company, Nelson and , Friendship being abreast behind them, but Clogs drew away at the turn, and ushered the field in the straight, Mr Lennard’s representative having two lengths’ lead of Victoria and Cannon as they passed the stand, Friendship being next, and Nelson, running with his mouth wide open, lying fifth ; whilst Sextant was last half a length behind the riderless Leorina. Clogs kept her position rounding the turn, and, settling into a fast stride, she had three lengths’ lead as they passed the seven-furlongs post, where a cry went up that she would win. Approaching the cutting, however, Nelson began to thread his way through his horses, and as they swept up the turn the favorite was only a length behind Clogs; Frindship third, whilst Sextant, coming with a steady run, was fourth, and looking very dangerous. Racing past the half-mile post, Nelson had beaten Clogs, and amidst great excitement led to the turn, but here his immediate followers closed round him, and as Brown hi ought out the whip it seemed as though a struggle would ensue in the run home, as Sextant, who was on terms with Clogs, was only half a length behind the leader. A dozen yards of the straight had, however, only been traversed when he died away, leaving Clogs to fight out the issue with the favorite. The mare responded gallantly to the calls of Taylor, but Nelson, staving off her every rush in the easiest possible manner, romped home an easy winner by a length, Sextant third, three lengths behind Clogs, Friendship fourth, Cannon fifth, and Victoria last. Time, 4min 6|sec. Dividends—lnside, LI 12s ; outside, LI 10s. There was a scene of great excitement as Nelson returned to scale, the horse and his rider being loudly cheered.
