MAYORAL ELECTIONS.

Seldom lias there been so little interest taken in any civic contest that has ever taken place in Wellington as that shown in the mayoral election which took place yesterday. The polling booth was at the Council Chambers, Brandon - street, usually on these occasions the centre of attraction. In the present instance, however, beyond the fact of there being a few cabs and other vehicles outside the Chambers and a number of people, who might be counted by half-dozens, standing about, there was nothing to show that Wellington was electing its chief magistrate for another year. Of course Mr Brown and Mr Pebherick, the (rival competitors for the office, were in the immediate vicinity all day, looking up stray votes, and toward evening the state of things described was slightly altered, but for the greater part of the day the apathy of the “free and independent elector” was particularly noticeable. The polling was carried on from 9 a.m. to G p.m., and during the day 1252 votes were polled, four of which were informal. The result of the poll was declared at 6.30 p.m. by Mr James Ames, Returning Officer, as follows : Mr Samuel Brown 794 Mr James Petherick ... 454

Majority for Mr Brown 340 Neither of the candidates was present when the poll was declared. A small crowd who had assembled loudly applauded when they hoard the result. The poll clerks who assisted Mr Ames wore Messrs J. Cherritt, R. A. Marshall, H. Moss, and W. Hester. Mr J. Price acted as scrutineer for Mr Brown, and Mr F. G. Petherick for his brother, Mr James Petherick.
