Publications PICITOH POR THE MASSES. PUBLICATION OF A gPLENDID | ’ gTORY A FAIR CRUSADER: A STORY OF TO-DAY, BY WILLIAM WESTALL. Author of Harry Lohengrin,’ ‘The Phantom City,’ ‘The Old Factory,’ ‘Red Ryvington, ‘ Two Pinches of Snuff,’ ‘ The Battle of the Winds,’ ‘Lucky Mr Briggs,’ &c&c., &o. It is with the utmost pleasure we announce the publication, in the columns of the New ; Zealand Mail, of : Friday, August sth, Of a new and brilliant work of Fiction,, by an author of such power and popularity as WILLIAM WESTALL. His previous- ; stories show he possesses in no ordinary degree the ability to write romances, healthy in sentiment, vigorous in treatment, abounding in touches of dry humour, and told in terse, crisp English. There is no waste of words in any of W. Westall’s stories, and the reader follows the development of his plots with increasing and absorbing interest. The characteristics which go to make up a good story are exhibited in remarkable combination in the story we have secured for the* gratification of our Readers. We trust our subscribers will give ihewidest publicity to this announcement, as we feel sure that the perusal of this new and original novel will afford an infinite amount of pleasurable gratification. The following is a brief DESCRIPTION OF THE STORT. ‘ A Fair Crusader ’ may be defined as being at once a Love Story, a Plot Story, and a Character Story, full of interest and with a strong dash of sensation. The hero, in every respect a strong man, who has distinguished himself in the Indian Mutiny, is brought on the scene in the first chapter, and the heroine, who has become a New Crusader (Salvationist), for a reason which is only disclosed when the narrative reaches its climax, I is the third. Although the Story opens at a northern sea-bathing place, the action takes j place principally in the neighbourhood of Epping Forest. The plot is novel and original, and the end, albeit in one sense tragical, is not unsatisfactory. The dramatic form of ‘ A Fair Crusader,’ its freedom from padding, tedious moralising, and merely descriptive writing, the briskness of its dialogue and the rapidity of its movement, together with the fact that it abounds in : surprises, and that the Author, without straining after effect, contrives to keep the reader continually in suspense, renders it especially suitable for Serial Publication. PRESS OPINIONS ON MR WESTALL’S PREVIOUS STORIES. ‘ In the author of * The Old Factory ’ and ‘ Red Ryvington ’ we have a novelist who rises above the rank and file. Mr Westall is a writer who informs as well as amuses. Not only is local coloring laid on with the skill of an expert, but in all those minor matters in which novelists generally show inaccuracy, the author exhibits a conversance which proves that he has not betaken himself to novel writing because he is not capable of other things. In short, Mr Westall is a thoughtful, well-informed, and versatile novelist.—London Times.
