WANGANUI JUBILEE EXHIBITION AND THE KAIAPOI WOOLLEN COMPANY.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir,— lii your issue of 21ac July, in the report of proceedings of the Wellington Woollen Company’s meeting, the Chairman is reported to have stated “ Some of their manufactured goods were sent to the Wanganui Exhibition to compete with the Kaiapoi article. Kaiapoi withdrew, and the judges, who were in no way interested, said privately that the result would have been Petone first, Kaiapoi second,” The facts are as follow The Exhibition Committee gave no awards in any class except that of home industries manufactures (i.e.,articles made by young persons), and produce and raw materials department, as shown by their advertised prospectus ; consequently all other classes were for exhibition only. Our exhibit was sent forward under these conditions, a fact admitted by the Exhibition Committee’s Secretary. The exhibits were not judged, and the Secretary informs ua that “ no official statement comparing the Kaiapoi and Wellington exhibits was made.” One of .the judges also tells us that “neither he nor any of the judges expressed an opinion of any kind upon the Kaiapoi exhibit.” The Wellington Chairman’s assertions are so contrary to the above facts that comment is needless. The question of comparative value of our goods weare content to leave to our numerous clients, upon whose competency and impartiality we can rely ; but in their imerests, as well as that of our Company, we ask your kind publication of this reply.—Wa are, &c..
