LATE TELEGRAPHIC.
(from our own correspondents.) Hawera, August 18. The General Committee of the Hawera Agricultural and Pastoral Association had a meeting to-dav, and decided to hold their show on St Andrew’s Day, 30th November. A requisition is being taken round for signature to day to ask Sir G. Grey to address the people here at an early date. (united press association.) Dunedin, August 18. At a meeting of the Education Board it was resolved to represent to the Government that the Board’s funds for .school buildings were exhausted, and, as more was urgently needed, they be requested to grant authority to incur a moderate expenditure on buildings. The Secretary of the Education Department duly acknowledged the receipt of the report on the syllabus, and the resolution was carried, expressing regret that the Head of the Department should attach so little attention to the opinion of the Board that had sent th6m a digested opinion of the moat valuable educational experts in the Colony. One of the prisoners in gaol laid a charge against a warder for striking him In the mouth, but it was entirely unsupported. It was dismissed, and the prisoner was sentenced to seven days. Writs have been issued against past and present members of the Lake County Couuoil for the recovery of about £I2OO illegally paid county funds, as shown by special audit by Mr Batkin. Two of the members who were in office at the time have since died. Manaia, August 18. The mail coach from Opunake met with an accident to-day, whereby a lady passenger had her arm and ankle broken, and the driver sustained rather serious injury. The horses were standing at the Oeo Hotel when they started off and capsized the coach. Auckland, August 18. Mr C. H. Street, a well-known citizen, and also well-known in the South, died suddenly this morning.
