Banda, cashier of the well-known firm of Wells, Fargo and Co. Ha was said to have taken with him aemeAo,ooodols in gold of the firm’s money. Photographs and a full description of the defaulter were sent to the Australasian colonies, and a detective, employed in America by the firm, was despatched to Tahiti in a lumber ship. By tbs Janet Niccol, which arrived this morning, it is stated that Bands, who is travelling under the alias of Scard, is at Baratonga, having reached there from Tahiti by the December trip of the Jahet Niccol. Soard, who states that he has been got away to save others, says that he has only 1700dols with hun. Ha has thoroughly ingratiated himself with Qneen Makea and her subjects (both black and white); and it is said that as long as he remains at the Islands’ kingdom he will bo safe from arrest, unless a strong force is taken to back np civil authority. It is understood that the American detective at Tahiti intended chartering a schooner and proceeding to Baratonga. The Baratongan Government have previously refused to surrender fugitive prisoners, and extradition is a thing unknown at that Island. Scard has hired a boose, and has sent an order to Auckland for fnrnitnre and other household requisites.
