RAILWAY RETURNS.
The railway returns for the four-weekly period ending Bth January last show that the total revenue for that period was L 92,099 8s 2d—L30,841 Is 4d from the North Island, and L 61.258 6s lOd from the Middle Island. This is an increase of nearly L3OOO on the returns for the same period last year, the amount of which was L 89,280 I3a lOd— L25,74i) 8s 9d for the North, and L 60,540 5a Id from the Middle Island. The returns from the various sections for the four-weekly period eadiog January Bth last were as follow ; North Island.
The expenditure for the four-weekly period amounted to L48,69l 17s 3d, as against L 48.810 18s 4d for tbe corresponding period of last year. The total revenue to date is L 739,975 12s lOd, and the expenditure L 533,964 I4s 2d. For the corresponding portion of last year the revenue was L 780,992 12s lOd, and the expenditure L 522,124 19s 4d. On the Wellington section daring the foarweeklyperiod 37,917 passengers were carried, as against 29,831 last year; 2630 parcels, as against 2110 ; goods, 8807 tons, as against 6411; stock, 15,605, as against 14,056.
