NEW YEAR’S DAY.

To-day, being New Year’s Day, will be a holiday, and a day of holiday-making. The weather so far for the holidays has been glorious, and if it is fine to-day Wellington will have for ever freed itself from reproach as “ a windy city.” Ample provision has been made for to-day for the general amusement ; the holiday-maker may celebrate the opening of the year of grace eighteen hundred and eighty-seven in one of many ways and places. The priucipal attraction no doubt will ba the Caledonian Society’s annual sports at tho Basin Reserve, where there will be running, jumping, jigging, reeljng, piping, wrestling, quoiting, etc. These sports commence at 10 o’clock. The entries for the different events to be run include the pick of the local athletic talent, and some capital amusement may reasonably be expected. Gray’s Band lias been engaged, and will play during the day. The Lower Valley jockey Club will hold their annual race meeting at Tauherenikau, and vehicles will meet the train to carry visitors to the course from the station. There will also ba races at Otaki, which, seeing that ample facility is given to visitors by the Wellmgton-Mana-watn Railway, will no doubt be well patronised. At the Lower Hutt a Presbyterian bazaar and garden party will be held in aid of thenew ohnrohbuildingfnnd. Onboth lines of railway careful arrangements have been made for the benefit of those who wish to take a run into the country, and the timetables have been duly published. Marine excursions to Blenheim by the Neptune, and to Somes Island by the Moa aud Manawatn, have been arranged. In tho evening there will be “The Great Pink Pearl” at the Opera House, “Babes in the Wood” at the Theatre, and Mr Robson’s capital “ Gordon Panorama ” at the Athemeum.
