The report was adopted. The House Committee’s report was read and adopted. It stated that the institution had been inspected on the 22nd instant, and everything found in a satisfactory state ; that the surgical instruments and fittings for the dispensary had arrived by the steamer Arawa, and they would be placed at the disposal of the staff this week. The Committee recommended that a new cupboard be purchased for keeping the instruments in. Clause 4 of the report stated that the Committee recommended that a piano be procured for the use of the institution, the one at present in use being hired only. The Chairman said that the nurses had hired the piano mentioned in the clause, which was a great source of amusement to the patients. The instrument, he said, was not essential for the maintenance of the Hospital, although ; it was very useful for amusing the patients. He thought the piano might be got by public subscriptions. Mr Luke thought it was a good object to appeal to the public upon. After some further discussion on the matter, Mr Williams moved that the clause read as a “suggestion” instead of a recommendation, and that steps be taken to procure a piano for the use of the institution as soon as possible. This was carried. The Chairman stated that, in accordance with a wish expressed at the last meeting of the Trust, ho had gone over the plans of the drainage for the Hospital with MrConnal, and after considering the matter Mr Connal thought it advisable that the whole of the present pipes should be taken up and relaid. He (Mr Connal) said they had been laid with clay instead of being cemented. He (the Chairman) did not think it necessary to proceed with the work. The question, he said, was whether they should expend Hospital funds on the work when the place was the property of the Crown. A short discussion took place, and the further consideration of the matter was referred to the Public Works Committee. Accounts, certified by the Finance Committee, amounting to £364 0» 4Jd, were passed for payment. Mr Gaby gave notice that he would move at the next meeting that the resolution passed re the appointment of an auctioneer for selling the Trust Reserve be rescinded. The Trustees then went into committee.
