EIRE IN TINAKORI-ROAD.

Afire broke out shortly after2a.m. on Monday morning in a small shop in the Tiuakoriroad, opposite the entrance to the Botanical Gardens, owned by Mr John Whamhy. Mr Joseph Lomas (under-gardener to Sir Julius Vogel), who kept a small confectioner's shop adjoining Whamby’s premises, was awakened by hearing a crackling noise, and on discovering tlie lire at once ! gave an alarm, and endeavoured to suppress the flames, but to no purpose, for the fire quickly spread on both sides, and completely destroyed the two shops, a dwelling-house on thesouthside of Whamby’s, in the occupation of his wife, and gutted the house of Mr Carter at thp rear. Wliamby, on whose promises the fire originated, was not at homeat thetimo. Mr Lomas managed to save the bulk of his goods, but little or nothing was saved from the other premises. The Fire Brigade was rather late getting on to the scene on account of the fire being beyond the city boundary, aud when they did arrive had much difficulty in getting water, some 700 ft of hose having to be run out for the purpose. The only insurance ascertainable was on Lomas’ pro. mises, he having £220 in the Colonial Office ou his house and its contents. It is only right 'to 1 award great credit to to Constable Carroll for the prompt assistance he gave. He broke into a house next Mr Lomas’ shop aud brought out several children, whose lives appeared to be in danger, and gave very valuable assistance all through.
