ARRIVAL OF THE STEAMER, WHAMPOA.

The China Steam Navigation Company’s uteamer Whampoa arrived here at 5 pm yester- ; day from Foochow, via Queensland ports,, Sydney, Melbourne, Dunedin, and Lyttelton, having left the latter port at £.30 tir. on Saturday. She northerly winds with head sea fromLyttelton, Her cargo consists of tea, etc., consigned to Messrs Johnston and Co. it turns out after all that this steamer is not the Whampoa which made the fast passage from London to Melbourne several years ago, but is a newer and much smaller vessel employed in the same trade as her namesake. She was built by Messrs Scott and Co, of Gartidyke, Greenock, in 1882, and is in many respects similar to the Tamsui, which has tinted lias port on two occasions. Het ler.gtn is 27qit, width 31ft, and depth Of hold 23ft. The saloon and officers’ quarters are situate on the flush deck, and are very comfortably fitted up. She has accommodation for 8 saloon, 1G second 5 cabin, and 24 third-class passengers, whilst a large number of Chinese Can be carried in the ’tween decks. The Vessel is provided with steam steering £eor, which can be utilised cither from the bridge or the wheelhouae, and she is also supplied with a patent wheel aft. There are three hatches, with the same number of steam winches to work the cargo. Ihe engines are direct acting compound, the diameter of the cylinders being 30in and 60in, with a stroke of 3ft Gin, and were constructed by Messrs Scott and Co, her builders. In the steamer are two water ballast-tanks — one aft and one amidships —with a capacity of 195 tons and 2G5 tons respectively, and are suitable for carrying water, cargo, or coal, as may be required. The Whampoa is officered as follows ■:—*-Commander, Captain J. E. Williams (late of the Chefoo) ; chief officer, Mr J. Warren ; second do, Mr H. Harder \ third do, Ur A. Stourmont; chief engineer, Mr J, Mudie ; second do, Mr W. Aird ; third do, Mr H. Carmichael. The number of the crew is 4(5, in addition to four quartermasters, who arc natives of Manilla. She leaves here probably to-morrow for Sydney, Queensland ports, and Hongkong.
