EDUCATION BOARD.

The Board met yesterday morning. Pre. sent—Messrs J, R. Blair (in the chair), A, W. -Brown, Bunny, W. O. Buchanan, M.H.U., Q. Beetham, M.H.R., J. Youns, Dr. Newman, M.H.R, and Rev J. Paterson. The Secretary reported the credit balance to be £3203 ; overdraft maintenance account, £3( 3 14s ; and credit to the building fund, £3313. The resignation of F. Bathune (Masterton), and Ellen Beck (Te Arc). It was decided to give the Fahaiitanui teacher three months' notice. The Masterton School Cooliillttee wrote asking that the Board’s architect might inspect the side school. It was decided to grant tbs application. In answer to Mr Beetham, the Secret try said the desks would be made in Masterton. Tha Masterton Committee asked the Board to reconsider its decision not to give Mr Kay a bonus of £2O. Mr Buchanan did not tbiak they could give these bonuses unless they reduced the question to one of system. Dr Newman pointed out that the Board had no money. It was decided not to grant the application, A similar app'ieatlon from tha Carterton Committee, on behalf of Mr Samuell, was refused, Mr W. F. Fori, recently appointed to Wadestown, asked for salary calculated ou the average attendance. Mr J. M. Fraser (Bslvidere) made a simitar application. Decided to inform both applicants that the increase cannot be made tilt July. The following tenders were accepted : Porirua new school, James Russell ; Ta'tta shelter sheds, James Russell ; Waihakeke residence, C. E. Daniel and Trotman and Humphries, These tenderers will have to draw lots, their tenders being equal. Palliatua residence, Thomas Miller. For the Petooe additions no tender was accepted, as the prices were too much above the catenate of the architect.

An application was received for a school at Alfredton. It was explained that some difficulty was found in fixing a site ; and it was dec : ded to aak the residents to famish a site. Miss Clife was appointed pupil teacher at Belvidere. The Belvidere Committee wrote complaining of the crowded state of the school, It was decided to request the Committee to send some of its pupils to the Carterton School. Mrs Sayer was appointed sewing mistress at the Dalefield School. A deputation waited upon the Board on behalf of the Newtown School Committee, asking the Board to make some improvements in the state of the drains at the Newtown School. The stench arising, it was explamed, was simply unbearable, and caused a great nuisance. The Chairman thought the better course would be for the Committee to apply to the City Council. A member of the deputation pointed oat that the Council bad already refused to take any steps in the matter. Another member of the d&putation said that a drain which had recently been laid down in front of the school, and in the school grounds, was thoroughly rotten. Mr Wilson said the Committee wished the Board to assist it in dealing with (he Corporation. It was decided (hat a deputation from the Committee, accompanied. by the Chairman of the B ard, should wait upon the Public Works Committee of the City Council at its next meeting. It was decided to put a new school at Mauriceville on the next year’s grant. Repairs applied for at Taitai, estimated to cost £25, were not granted. Expenditure asked for by the Inspector for diagrams was authorised. The Hutt Committee applied for additional room. The matter was placed on the schedule of works. The Dreyerton Committee estimated the fencing as asked for at £62 IDs. The Dalefield Committee estimated shelter sheds to coat £2O 18s ; and the Kaiwarra Committee similar works, to cost £lO. Expenditure was authorised for painting at Makara. ■ The Kaitara new residence and Martinborough school were placed upon the schedule. The Matarawa Committee having applied for repairs to school, it was decided to ask them for an estimate. An application was received for a school at Wbakataki. A site was provided, and a considerable amount had been subscribed by the settlers. It was decided that if tbe Government would find half tbe amount needed for the erection of the school, in consideration of the tuition of Native children attending, the Board would- provide tbe remainder. Mr Bunny having made a report in reference to the Tauhereoikau School, tbe meeting terminated.
