BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.
The usual fortnightly meeting was held yesterday. Present—Mr If. Wardell, R.M. (in the chair), Rev H. Van Sta.eren, Messrs S, Dauks, T. MoKenz'e, J. E. Smith, B. Smith. The Secretary reported that a man who cams from tbe Wairarapa with a bad toe was unable to work, and he was authorised to grant him board and residence for a few days. A man who came from the Wairarapa, with tbe view of entering the Wellington Hospital, was sent back at a cast of IJb, as Dr Chilton did not consider him a fit case. A man who came from Foxton, suffering from a sore arm, was granted a week’s board and lodging. It was stated that he bad begun work, but hia arm had got bad again. A man came before tbe Committee who stated that be had been a stationer in Loudon, and afterwards owned some chemical work**, bat eventually went to South Africa, and then came to this Colony. He applied for assist* ance, stating that be had only been able to get a little work at rabbiting daring the past few months. It was resolved to grant a week’s board and lodging, oa the understating that he should do some work in cutting gorse tor the City Council. The ease of some children, who were reported to be in a starving and filthy condition, was referred to. The Secretary said be found that, although the children were dirty, there was no deficiency of food. Rations were granted to tbe family of one of tbe men recently drowned io the harbor, and a pair of blankets to another family. The Secretary reported that eight persons were oa the Society’s books. One woman who had been receiving relief was able to work since the death ot her husband, and conld now get on without assistance. Members expressed pleasure that the woman had been able to do so, and hoped that others would follow her example of self-reliance.
