RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT. Tuesday, May 26. (Before Mr H. 8. Wardell, 8.M.) WANOEBINO HOBBJS3. John Smith, who did not answer to bis name, was charged with being the owner of a horse found wandering In Willla-street. Fined 6a with costs. Thomas Wilson, charged with a similar breach of the by-laws, was mulcted in a similar penalty. This defendant was also absent. Michael O’Drisoll and Thomas Wilson pleaded guilty, and were fined Is each. FOBIOUS BIDING, Victor Lundquist and Timothy Clark pleaded guilty to furious riding, and were fined 20a each, with costs. OHIUNEt ON FIRE. Margaret Sinclair, for allowing her chimney to catcb fire, was fined £J, with 7s costs. COWS AT LARGE. Wright v. Soaramellf, The defendant was charged with having allowed nine cows and two calves to be at large on tbe main road at Island Bay. Mr Chapman for tbe prosecution, Air Devine for tbe defendant. Counsel for tbs plaintiff said the facts of tbe caee were that the defendant had an acre of ground unfenced at Island Bay, which bo considered sufficient for the grazing of about twenty cows. Mr Devine submitted that there was no main road at Island Bay which would bring tbe offence under the Public Offences Act. After a short diEcussion, his Worship said he did not feel inclined to hold, at that moment at any rate, that proof of registration was necessary,' and Mr Chapman said he would produce documentary evidence later on. Evidence was then taken for the prosecution, to prove that tbe cattle bad been wandering on the road. Mr Chapman subsequently produced evidence of the dedication of the road, and hia Worship held that that was sufficient proof of the exigence of a public way. Scaramelll had no right to graze cattle on the road. Defendant was fintd I CM, with coats of prosecution. STEALING A SWAG. Thomas Franklyn was charged with stealing a swag containing good*, value £4 6s, the property of Alfred Cook. The accused, who was undefended, elected to be dealt with summarily. He pleaded guilty, having been under the influence of liquor at the time he committed the offence. It appeared from the evidence that tbe swag in question bad been left by Cook in the bar of the Pier Hotel, and was subsequently fouud in tbe prisoner’s bunk on'the Arawa, Inspector Goodall handed in a letter from the Chief Officer of the Arawa, staling that Franklyn bore a very good character ; and the Inspector added that the Captain' also spoke in high terms of the accused's character and conduct Mr Wardell sentenced the accused to' Imprisonment until before the departure gf tbe Arawa from-Lyttelton,

explaining that, under the circumstance?, he should, nut like to prevent Frankly a from rejoining bis ship. LARCENY. Robert Daniels and Dennis Kelly, charged with larceny, were remanded till to day. The accused’s own bail was accepted. NEGLECTED CHILDREN. Thomas Pascoa was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment for neglecting to satisfy an order made against him for the payment of 24i per week for the support of bis three children. Charles Ernest Durant was sentenced to a similar term of imprisonment for neglecting to provide for bis child, Mr Wardell pointing oat that the imprisonment did not relieve the accused from the arrears of maintenance.
