FIRE AND LOSS OF LIFE AT HAWERA.

Hawera, July 5. A large fire occurred at Cook's Hotel, corner of High and Princess-streets last night, the place being completely gutted. The fire broke out at the fireplace in one of the sitting rooms and quickly spread, having a firm hold before the tire brigade could get to work. They Managed, however, to get the flames under before the whole of the building had been destroyed, and prevented its spread to an adjoining block. Some of the furniture and stock was saved, but the place wrs quite a wreck. Insurances —£1000 in the Northern on the stock and £7OO in the New Zealand, and £SOO in the National on the building. A man named Thomas Kilroy, who was sleeping in one of the rooms, was suffocated, and the body found after the fire slightly charred. He appeared to have been dazed by th© smoke, as he was found on hia hands and knees on the floor. He could easily have escaped other* wise. _____
