Electoral Notices TO THE ELECTORS OK THE KOXTON DISTRICT. GENTLEMEN —1 have again to request the honour of your Votes at the approaching election. Under present circumstances it is impossible to predict what party will bo in power after the new House meets. I come forward as an independent candidate, pledged to no party, but willing to support that which is likely to be best for the colony. We arc very deeply ic debt, and our expenditure during the last year has exceeded our income. W e must retrench and adopt a course of strict economy. I think that the cost of the Civil Service may bo materially reduced, and especially a great saving effected with regard to the Native Office. The working of the Education Act costs far too much money. Whilst maintaining the principle of the Act, I would reduce the amount spout upon it,' I am in favour of retaining the Legislative Council with its present constitution, hut I would abolish the payment to the members of that House, and reduce by one-half the payment to the members of the Lower House. I am in favor of the State selling land on the deferred payment system. The price of the land should be low enough to enable the poorer settlers to take advantage of the system. I am not in favor of the theory which advo. cates the leasing only of the public estate. If such a system were adopted, I fear settlers of means, with practical agricultural experience, would be deterred from coming to the colony. They would object to a new change from landlords elsewhere to landlords here. I am entirely opposed to the resumption by the Government of the pre-emptive right over native lands, I am opposed to further borrowing, except for most absolutely necessary purposes. The Main Trunk Like of Railway must be completed. Money must also bS found for working tiro Roads and Bridges Construction Act, For this purpose the Government might borrow on the English market and lend to local bodies at English rate of interest, taking proper security for repayment of principal and interest. I have the honor to be, Gentlemen, Yours faithfully, 390 GHAS. B. IZAIU). TE ARO ELECTION. jYJj’R F. H. FRASER will Address the Electors in the ARCADE THIS (FRIDAY) EVENING, at 8 o’clock sharp.
