Throughout the Egyptian crisis the Khedive has acted well—very well. But it dots not seem to be known who is the instigator of his firm attitude. It is his wife. He married the grand-daughter of Abbas Pasha. She is beautiful and atrons'minded, and Tewfik is entirely under her influence. This modern Cleopatra is rich, and when money has been wanted to bribe the Turks she has, greatly to her dislike, been obliged to provide it.
