Sib, —We have read with much pleasure your report of Dr. Newman’s interesting lecture on “Capital and Labor,’’ and are glad indeed to sea that this gentleman has at last become a “ convert*’—converted to principles to which only three years ago be was a bitter antagonist. This is what Dr. Newman said at the Chamber of Commerce on 11th November, 1879, when the manufacturers’ interests were being discussed by the Chamber, viz., “ I hardly think it. fair for a member of this Chamber to come forward and ask for the appointment of a Committee.” This is what the same gentleman stated on Wednesday last, viz., “ Later, however, the rise of colonisation and of manufacturers opened up wealth to vast numbers of the poor.” “ The rise of manufacturers opened up wealth exactly so. Oh, most learned doctor— Most wise and worthy docter t We welcome you with open arms ! We rejoice at your conversion, and so long as you remain with us we shall look upon you indeed as a bright and shining light. We shall invite you to more lectures ; we shall "chair ’’ you round, and otherwise display our affection for! you and the principles you have adopted ; but if you return again to the enemy—well, then—we cannot say what may happen. Mr Editor, we think we may congratulate ourselves, as supporters of the manufacturers’ interests, upon having scored a point in their favor under the remarks ot our excellent friend.
