FIRE INSURANCE RATES.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sib, —The following comparison of insurance rates charged in Wellington and Christchurch respectively, will, I think, remove any impression that rates are higher here than in the “ Cathedral City,” and show that even with the recent Christchurch reduction of 25 per cent., Wellington insurers are not at a disadvantage. . I have before me the last Christchurch tariff, and have, in each case deducted 25 per cent, fiom the rates therein quoted, with the following result ;—The lowest rate for a wooden and iron building here is 7s 6d, and the highest is 16a 6d ; in Christchurch the corresponding rates are lls ,3d and 16a Hd. For wood and iron shops not specially rated, and where no hazardous trade is carried on, wo charge, lowest, 22s 6d ; highest, 32a 6d. In Christchurch, the charges are 22s 6d Bd. For wood and iron hotels not specially rated, we get, lowest, 37s 6d; highest, 50a ; Christchurch has 37a 6d and 58s 2d. The shops along Willis-street and Lambtonquay pay 37s fid per cent., except a few which are considered more hazardous by reason of their situation, occupation, or construction. In Christchurch many of these would pay 58s 2d. I hare selected for comparison the rates on the most common classes of buildings erected in Wellington, so as to avoid intricacies of tariffs, but I may say that the general features of the Christchurch tariff are less advantageous to the assured ' than my quotations show.—l am, &c,, Insurance Agent. Wellington, September 28, 1882.
