At an influential MEETING held at the MANSION HOUSE on WEDNESDAY, February 1, the LORD MAYOR presiding, to express public opinion in regard to the persecution which the Jews of Russia have recently, and tor some time past, been suffering, it was resolved : “ That a Fund be ra'sed at the Mansion House for the purpose of contributing to relieve the distress among the Jewish population of Russia, and among the refugees therefrom, which distress has been caused by the recent outrages of which they have been the victims, and also for the purpose of effecting some permanent amelioration in their condition in such a manner as the Committee may deem expedient, whether by emigration or otherwise ; and that the Right Hon. the Lord Mayor be requested to receive contributions on behalf of such Fund.” Addresses were made at the above meeting by members of nearly all denominations, including the following : The Right Hon. the Lord Mayor, Earl of Shaftesbury, Bishop of London, Cardinal Manning, Canon Farrar, Professor Bryce, M.P., and others, who expressed their sympathy with the cause, and their horror at the outrages being committed. Letters of sympathy were received from the Rev. 0. H. Spurgeon, the Duke of Westminster, Hr Alfred Tennyson, and others, who were unavoidably absent. THE CLERGY THROUGHOUT THE UNITED KINGDOM HAVE NOT ONLY EXPRESSED THEIR SYMPATHY, BUT HAVE MADE SUCCESSFUL APPEALS TO THEIR CONGREGANTS. It was resolved at a meeting held at the Synagogue, Wellington, that an APPEAL be made to the public for subscriptions in aid of the ABOVE FUND. The following gentlemen were elected a Committee to receive subscriptions, viz.— Re". H. Van Staveren, G. E. Shrimski, M.H.R. ; Jacob Joseph* J. B. Nathan, L. L. Harris, W. I. Nathan, A. Beaver, J. Myers, B. Cohen, M. L. Marks, I. Phillips, and S. Scott, and they now earnestly appeal for support in aid of the above charitable object. It is well known that numbers of towns and villages, wholly or partly inhabited by Jews in Southern Russia, have been destroyed by incendiarism, the houses sacked and pillaged, and the inhabitants, in addition to being ruined and rendered homeless, have been subjected to the vilest outrages ever known. Fathers of families have been brutally murdered; mothers and daughters outraged and otherwise injured, and all in the presence of the Russian military and police, who took no steps to prevent the crimes, but in many instances took an active part in them. who were once in affluence are now in a STARVING CONDITION. Late telegrams inform us that at the present time there are 10,000 RUSSIAN JEWISH REFUGEES encamped at Brody, and that they are LITERALLY STARVING, and that there is GREAT MORTALITY AMONGST THE CHILDREN. Notwithstanding the noble efforts being made all over the civilised world, the demands on the MANSION HOUSE FUND are so great, it is essential that all who have the cause of humanity at heart should contribute their mite, and, under these circumstances, the Committee make this second APPEAL to their fellow-citizens with the utmost confidence. 556
