RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

Thursday, February 16. (Before Mr E. Hardcaatle, R.M.) Obscene Lanodaoe —Sarah Baylis wag put forward charged with using bad language, and pleaded guilty, through great provocation. Mr E. Shaw, who appeared for the prisoner, stated that the woman, who is of the “ unfortunate ” class, stated that she had been annoyed by larrikins breaking her ■windows, and being incensed she had used bad language on Thorndouquay, opposite her house, which she deeply regretted. Constable Shee gave evidence that the accused bad used obscene language before about forty persons. A fine of 40s and 5s costa was imposed, the default being seven days’ imprisonment. The Candle Eobeery. - James Anderson, who appeared last Monday on the charge of stealing a quantity of soap and candles from Tattersall’a Hotel on the Ist instant, and who was on that occasion discharged, again appeared to answer the charge of receiving the property knowing it to be stolen. Mr E. Shaw appeared for the accused. The evidence in the case was identical with that given on three former occasions. The Bench, believing that a prima fade case had been established, the prisoner was committed for trial, bail being allowed in two sureties in £lO each and prisoner’s own recognizance in £2O. Sacked. —John Smith pleaded guilty to stealing three cornsacks, the property of Franz Haselhuhn. As some other property had been reported to have been stolen from the prosecutor’s store which had not been recovered, Sergeant Anderson applied for the prisoner’s remand for 8 days, which was granted.
