RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Wednesday, February 15. (Before Messrs J. Dransiield, E. W, Mills, and E. Baker, J.P.’s.} Drone. —Henry Becker pleaded guilty to having been drunk. The man, who only recently arrived in the colony by the ship Euterpe, since which time, according to Sergeant Anderson, he had been drinking heavily, was remanded for three days. On hearing the sentence the man went into a swoon and was removed from the Court in a fainting condition. The Soap Case. —Robert Harrison was brought up on warrant, charged with stealing three bars of soap and Slbs of candles, the property of Kate Hannay, landlady of the TattersaU’s Hotel, in whose employ he had been for about a month. A person, named McCredie, deposed that, on the Ist instant, he received instructions from a man named James Anderson, with whom he was living at the time, to obtain a parcel from the prisoner. The witness stated that the accused told him to go into the biliiard-room, where he would fiod some things under the billiard cloth. Witness did as desired by the prisoner and found the property, the subject of the present prosecution, which he took to Anderson’s hou<e. The prisoner denied all knowledge of the robbery, and asserted that access to the storeroom could have been gained by anyone residing in the place, in addition to which the window of the store-room was left unfastened and could have besu easily raised by anyone from outside. The Bench sent the prisoner to gaol for seven days.
