EDUCATION BOARD.

The ordinary monthly meeting o! the above Board was held yesterday. Present—The Hon. C. J. Pharazyn (Chairman), Yen. Archdeacon Stock, Kev. J. Paterson, Dr. Newman, Messrs H. Bunny, C. Pharazyn, Blair,' Beatham, and Hutchison, The report from the Building Committee was read and, at a later period of the meeting, adopted. The following recommendations for |grantß-in-aid to the various School Committees were agreed to !—Mungaroa school, £2OO for improvements to building ; Makara, Maurioeville, Kaiwaiwai, Gladstone, Waingawa, Opaki, and Kaitara schools, £6 each for necessary repairs; Johnsonville, £25 ; Tauherenikau, £lO ; and |Pahautauui Committee, £lO, for repairs to masters’ residences. The Committee recommended the payment of the sum of £2O to the Johnsonville school, but, on representations made by a deputation which waited on the Board, the vote was increased by £5. On the motion of Mr Bunny, the sum of £5 was voted the Peatherston School Committee to pay off several small debts. The sum of £ls was, on the motion of Dr. Newman, passed to Mr Mowbray,of theThorndon School, for the purchase of physical apparatus required for educating pupil teachers, Mr Hutchison gave a notice of motion to the effect that the Board institute a night school, where the usual standards now in vogue in public schoolsmight be taught, together with instruction in the higher branches of education. Mr Hutchison remarked that probably the Willis-street school could be used for the purpose, and that his reason for bringing the matter forward was that there were a nuinber of young lads anxious to receive instruction, but unable through their avocations to attend school during the day. In one instance, he knew of a lad who had won a scholarship, but, being at work during the day time, was prevented from following up the advantage which wogld be afforded him at a night school. Mr Hutchison promised to prepare a scheme for consideration at the next meeting. The sum of £2 11s was voted to the Pahautanui School Committee, in addition to a previous vote of £l2 granted by the Board, for repairs to buildings, a contract having been let forJ£l4 lls on account of that work. A complaint from the Kaitara Committee against the schoolmaster (Mr Wakelin) was referred to the Inspector to report upon. The action of t)ie Taita Committee jn having a Veil supk and pump erected in the Ipcal school grounds was apprpved, and the cost of the work, £8 10s, ordered to be paid. The resignation of MrMaofadgen, master of the Wadestown school, was accepted, to date from February I, 1883. A report was read from Messrs Hardy and Watson, tfce examiners, as to the fitness of pnpil teachers, in which they stated that there were several pupil teachers holding appointments under the Board whose work was very irregular and unsatisfactory. It was resolved that the teachers referred to be notified that the regulations under which they were appointed would, in future, be strictly enforced. to the general account of £1750 4s 6d, and to the building account of £14313s Id. • Tenders were opened for the erection of a schoolhouae at Whiteman’s Valley, and that of Mr Findlay being the lowest, was accepted. An honorarium of £lO 10s each was voted to Messrs West and Gammell for services in connection with the recent scholarship examinations. , The boundaries of the Wadestown new school district having been approved of by the local Committee, were submitted and finally adopted, the district to be constituted a separata school district from the Ist January next. The date for holding meetings for the election of the various School Committees was fixed to be held on Tuesday, January 24,1882. The Board then adjourned.
