RAILWAY RETURNS.

The traffic retrtrus on the New Zealand railways for the four weeks ending 15th October, 1881, are published, and show the follow-

£58,705 16 9 55,739 8 G On the North Island section, the total receipts from the commencement of the financial year to the termination of the four-weekly period above noted (on 447 miles of line) were £103,441 7s Od, and expenditure for the corresponding period, £70,307 13s Id. On the South Island section, the total receipts for the period named on 857 miles of line amounted to £355,645 8s 9d, and expenditure £204,663 12s Id. The grand totals being 1304 miles; receipts, £459,086 15s 9d; expenditure, £275,031 5s 2d. Tor the corresponding period in last year the total receipts were £432,562 5s 6d, and the expenditure £292,939 4s Bd. 9 he percentage of expenditure to receipts on the various lines stands thus ;— Whangarei, 107 -21; Auckland, 67'00; Napier, 6T90; Wellington, 77'57; Wanganui, 62 66; New Plymouth, 76'70; Hurunui—Bluff, 57'34; Greymouth, 50'21; Westport, 61'49 ; Nelson, 76T8 ; Pioton, 61 '76 ; general average, 59'91. Tor the corresponding month last year the average was 677'2.
