Monday, July 14. (Before Mr. Mansford, R.M., and Mr. Cook, . J.P.) DRUNKENNESS. Christina Wilson, who had been several times previously convicted, was fined ss. Thomas Sheppard, for a first offence, was ordered to pay 6s. Michael Hedden, for the aggravated offence of being intoxicated at 10 o’clock on Sunday morning, was mulct in a penalty of 10s. and costs. ILLEGALLY ON THE PREMISES. Henry Hancock, Jehu Carson, and John Prestridge were charged with being illegally on the premises of Henry Pascoe at 4 o’clock in the morning. In the absence of Mr. Allan, who was engaged to defend one of the prisoners, the case was adjourned till 10 o’clock this morning, all three prisoners being admitted to bail. ASSAULT. James Shearer was charged by Rebecca Stewart with violently assaulting her by kicking her on the leg. The evidence of the prosecutrix disclosed that she was a single woman living with the prisoner. On the 28th ultimo, while she was ironing his shirts in the front room, he came in and wanted to chop some firewood on the carpet. This she would not allow, and threw his shirt into the kitchen, at the same time telling him to take his wood to the same place. He then caught her by the hair of the head and kicked her several times. She said if he did not let her go she would kick him, and endeavored to do so. She had been under medical treatment ever since. She had seen four medical men on the subject, and had been under their treatment.

In cross-examination prosecutrix admitted having called prisoner bad names, and said she could not say how many times prisoner had kicked her.

Two witnesses gave corroborative testimony. Dr. Gillon deposed to having examined prosecutrix, and found the tibia bone of the leg broken. She had gone to the Hospital, and he had told her to call again as the wound was too much swelled for him to operate, upon it then, but she had not returned. In answer to a question from prisoner prosecutrix said she did not think he intended to kick her, and commenced to charge him with a certain robbery, but was interrupted by prisoner, who said he had stood his trial for that.

In defence prisoner said that the accident had occurred in a souffle, when ho was trying to prevent the woman, who had a most violent temper, from doing him any damage by kicking him. The Resident Magistrate was ’of opinion that a very brutal assault had been committed, and ordered the prisoner to be sent to gaol for four weeks. MALICIOUS DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY. Ambroeias don Whiskeraus was charged with wilfully destroying certain property, and was remanded to Featherston. A DOUBLE OFFENCE. Charles W. Woods was charged with deserting his wife in Christchurch, and leaving her with no adequate means of support. There was also another charge against him of leaving Timaru with intent to evade the Debtors and Creditors Act. Sergeant Anderson asked that the prisoner might be remanded to Timaru. He (witness) was at the station when he was brought in, and after first stating that his name was O. Hamson he admitted that it was Woods. . Prisoner asked if he could not b® remanded to Timaru. Sergeant Anderson informed the Bench that the Christchurch police wished the ease sent to that city.' Remanded to Christchurch accordingly. EMBEZZLEMENT. Walter Thompson was charged with embezzling several small sums of money, amounting in the aggregate to 9s. 2d., and was remanded tor a week.
