EDUCATION BOARD.

A meeting of the Education Board was held yesterday at their offices. Present —The Hon. 0. J. Pharazyn (in the chair), the Hon. W. Gisborne, the Yen. Archdeacon Stock, the Rev. Mr. Paterson, Messrs. H. Bunny, G. Beetham, 0. Pharazyn, and later Mr. Hutchison. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. A statement was read by the Chairman showing a balance in the bank of £3900. maurxceville school. The cost of lining was reported to be about £2O, in reply to a letter from the Board. EKETAHUNA. A letter from Mr. Petherick was read, in which he asked for further payment on the work done. He invited any member of the committee to inspect the work, stating that Mr. Green was in disfavor. Mr, BEETHAM explained that he believed the letter from Mr. (Ireen to the Board had n»t been published in a perfectly accurate form by the newspapers. It had been written in a moment of irritation. After some discussion the matter was postponed. In regard to a letter relating to the Ekatahuua school, Mr. Beetham stated that he understood legal action for libel had been taken by Mr. Petherick against Mr. Green, founded upon the letter addressed by the latter to the Board. In consequence Mr. King had been authorised by Mr. Beetham to report upon the building. COUETENAY-PLACB SCHOOLROOM. A letter was read from Mr. H. B. Redstone offering to let the United Methodist Schoolroom there for £1 per week. , Mr. Lee explained that the Thorudou schools were much overcrowded, but Mount Cook schools were not. The offer was referred to the local] committee. LOWER HUTT SCHOOL. A resolution was received from the chairman of the committee stating that they viewed with regret the resolution of the Board, and asking for the matter to bo reconsidered. Mr. Bunny moved, and Mr. Paterson seconded, “ That the sum of £l2O be expended at once in the additions to the teacher’s residence, which had been asked for.” CARTERTON. , , , , A letter was read from the local committee stating that they considered that the Belvidere School Was premature. It was resolved that the resolution of the committee should be forwarded to the petitioners. MOUNT COOK SCHOOL. The committee of the school begged to concur in the appointment of Mr. Hardy to the school. If they had been able, they would have recommended Mr. Liilington. EXTRA TEACHERS. A letter from Mr, A. Clare was read asking for an advance of salary. Mr. Lee explained that Mr. Clare was appointed as a supernumerary teacher. Mr. Hutchison objected to any supernumeraay appointments ns being ultra vires. It was in his opinion both wrong and illegal to make such appointments. Mr. Gisborne also objected. An advance of £lO on account of his salary was granted to Mr. Clare. SCHOLARSHIP EXAMINATION. Hr. Paterson proposed,that the Rev. Mr. West be appointed an examiner. He was well known as a scholarly man, and a practical educationist. Mr. Bowden was also proposed by Mr. Paterson. Mr. G. Beetham proposed that. Mr. Barron, the Civil Service Examiner, bo offered the appointment. Mr. West was appointed examiner, and the other appointments were deferred. proposed high school. The Secretary of the Featherston School Committee, Mr. Girr, wrote asking the Board to appoint the Featherston school a high school under the Act. The matter was adjourned. new schools. The following reports of the Building Committee were read ; The Building Committee reported to the effect that Mr. Maginnity and Mr. Woodward having attended on behalf of the Thorndon committee, it was decided to instruct Mr. Toxward to prepare plans for a mixed school, to ‘ accommodate 600 children and to coat £3OOO, Messrs. Tobmath, Paterson, Woodward, Maginnity, and Toxward to meet at the site and decide what stylo of building should be erected. The Building Committee also reported that Messrs. Wilson, Gardner, and Fraser having attended the meeting it was resolved that designs be invited for a mixed school in Upper Willis-street, the building to afford accommodation for 600 children, and the cost not to exceed £3OOO.

The reports were both adopted. The Building Committee recommended that the design of Mr. Schwartz be accepted, subject to certain modifications, without increasing the cost, which is not to exceed £I2OO. It appeared that the Building Committee had exceeded their powers in respect to the

Te Aro school, and the Rev. Mr. Stock apologisod for the error .by which an advertisement had appeared calling for tenders up to £3OOO, whereas only £2OOO had been authorised. The extra £IOOO was accorded as a supplementary grant. After a long discussion, the report on the Newtown school was referred back to the committee. ME. DOHERTY’S CASE. The following are the legal expenses in connection with Mr. Dohertys case; Mr. Barton’s account, £72 6». 6d.; taxed off, £2l 13s. 10d.; £SO 12s. Bd. Costs of action, £445 14s. Bd. ; taxed off, £284 10s. 6d. ; £2ll 6s, 10d.—Mr. Brandon’s costs, £207 2s. _4d. ; Mr. Barton’s costs, £2ll 6s. 10d.; verdict, £SO; total, £478 2s. Bd. NOTICES OF MOTION. The following notices of motion were given ; yp r , Beetham to move,—That immediate action should be taken to provide normal teaching within the Wellington _ Education District. That tho resolution relating to competitive designs for large city schools be rescinded. Mr. C. Phara/.yn to move, —That steps be taken to give effect to the request of the Featherston School Committee, and that the Featherston School be declared a District High School. ' Archdeacon Stock to move, —That the expenses of members of the Board in attending the meetings of the Board be paid by the treasurer. Mr. Paterson to move, —That the Terrace School be declared a District High School. The Board adjourned at 2 p.m.
