The Anchor Line steamer Kennedy, from Nel»on and Westport, in attempting to ckh* tho bar this afternoon got ashore on tho North Spit, where she now lies broadside on. She cannot get off this tide. AUCKLAND. Saturday. Tho Hero sails for Sydney and Melbourne on Monday afternoon. The Hawea sails for the East Coast and Southern ports on Monday. Tho following vessels were in port last night:— Steamers—Arawata, Wanganui, Wellington, Hula, and Stormbird. Ships—Pleiades and Peri. Barques— Gloria, Clan Campbell, Olcndovey, and Isaac Hall. Brig—Jane. Brigantines—Sarali Pile, Hannah Broomfield, and Enterprise. The Arawata left at 4.45 p.m. on Saturday; cleared tho French Pass at 7.30 p.m., and arrived at Wellington at 1.30 pm. She sails for Melbourne via the South to-day. The steamer Wanganui, from tho South, arrived in harbor yesterday at noon She’ left Dunedin on Wednesday evening: arrived at Oamaru on Thursday morning and Lyttelton on Friday morning. Loft there on Saturday night, and arrived hero as above. Tho steamer Huia left here last Tuesday night; arrived Off Kapiti at S a.m. the next morning and anchored; left again at 9 a.m. When off Otaki the chief engineer had his hand badly hurt by getting jammed amongst tho machinery; arrived off tho Foxton bar at 2 p.m., and got inside at 3.39 a.m. ; left again at 3 p.m. on Saturday, and arrived hero at 1,30 a.m. yesterday. The steamer Lyttelton left on Saturday night for Blenheim. The steamer Grafton left on Saturday night for Westport and Greymouth. The Ladybird will not arrive here from tho South until to-morrow. Tho steamer Manawatu left for Wanganui on Saturday. Tho brig Neptune left on Saturday for Newcastle. The steamer Go-Ahead left for Wanganui on Saturday forenoon. Tho steamer Tui arrived hero at 7 o’clock on Saturday morning. She left Wanganui at 4 p.m. on Friday, and experienced fino weather round. She went round to tho Slip at 11 o’clock far her periodical overhaul. The brigantine Hannah Broomfield has finished discharging her timber, and came alongside the wharf on Saturday to take in ballast. She sails to-day for Hokianga. The barque Gloria goes to Oamaru to load grain for the Homo market. She will probably get away to-day. The steamer Wellington left the Manukau at 1 p.m. on the 28th, and arrived off Taranaki at 7.30 a.m. on tho 29th; left again at 9 a.m., and reached Nelson at 3.30 a.m. on the 30th : proceeded on at noon, called at Picton, and arrived here at 7.45 Saturday morning. Fine weather was experienced to Taranaki, tlienco to arrival strong southerly winds. The Wellington sails to-day for Picton and Nelson. Two of her Majesty’s ships which have done good service on tho Australian stations have been ordered to return home, namely, the Nympho, 9, screw sloop. Captain P. Townsend, from Australia to Spithcad (commissioned at Sheerneas Jannary 5, 1875), and the Sapphire, 14, screw corvette, Captain E. H. Murray, from Australia to Devonport (commissioned there August 0, 1875). Information was received in Auckland on Tuesday that tho schooner Norval was ashore high and dry about four miles to the north of Tologa Bay, East Coast. The schooner is under the command of Captain Conway, who had his wife and child on board, and left Gisborne in ballast to load with posts atsomo place near where she had been driven ashore. She is high and dry on tho beach at high water, and, so far as can be ascertained, has sustained little damage. Captain Worsp, on behalf of the insurance companies, proceeded to the scene of the wreck at once, and took down anchors and other material, for the purpose of trying to get her off. She schooner (says the Hn'alO) is valued at about £I4OO. and is insured in the New Zealand and National offices for £IOOO, Tho Norval is 5G tons register, and almost a new vessel, being built in 1877, and until quite recently has been engaged in tho Island trade. THE S.S. GRAFTON. Captain Williams’ steamer Grafton, which has been undergoing extensive alterations to her imchlnery, under the hands of Mr. Robertson, of tho Fhcenuc Foundry, went her trial on Saturday afternoon. A number of persons accompanied the steamer. The speed attained was dose on 10 knots. She is supplied with surface-condensing engines on compound principle. nominal power 104 horse power ; but capable of working up to 350. She has twin screws to each pair of engines. The following are the dimensions of tho chief parts of tho machinery:—High pressure cylinder, ISin. diameter ; low pressure cylinder, 34in. diameter, with 20in. stroke. Fitted with the latest improvements, having variable expansion gear, so that steam can bo cut off at part of the stroke. She has a multitubular boiler, ten furnaces. The shell of the boiler is j-plato. They wore tested to a pressure of 140 lbs. to the square inch, under the inspection of the Government Engineer. The consumption of coal will not exceed 10 tons In 24 hours. She has ten of BcsH’mor’s steel screw shafts. The engine made 113 rev lutions on the trial trip, and with a pressure of SOlbs. steam ran a measured knot In 6 minutes. Tho Grafton left the wharf at 3 p.m,, and returned again at 4.30. Her cabin accommodation Is excellent, being airy and roomy. Tho ladles’ saloon Is also very comfortable. Captain Fraser, late chief officer of the Luna, has been appointed master.
