RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Satubdat, May 31. (Before Messrs. J. H. Wallace and P. Moeller, J.P’s.) One inebriate was dealt with in the usual way for drunkenness. VAGRANCY. Thomas Johnston; who was arrested for vagrancy, was remanded until Monday. LAECENT. Frank Bailey was charged with stealing two meat dishes from the house of Dr. Lemon. Prisoner pleaded guilty. The same prisoner was then charged with stealing two cakes, value 25., from the shop of Mr. Towesley, Lambton-quay. Prisoner pleaded hard to be let off, stating that hunger made him take the cakes. He was willing to work, but could get no employment. The Bench sentenced him to three months imprisonment with hard labor. PETTY LAECENT. John Grigg, a youngster, was charged with stealing a cake, valued at Is., from a shop in Willis-street. . The Bench severely reprimanded the boy, and discharged him. , BREACHES OF THE CITY BY-LAWS. W. Cooper and Eobert Eollinson wore each fined Is. and costs for leaving their horses unprotected. . William Taylor was summoned for a similar offence, but the case was dismissed. J. H. Smith was summoned for not keeping his premises clean. Prisoner stated that the nuisance would he removed at once, and the case was dismissed.
