INDIA AND THE EAST.
(PER PRESS AGENCY.) Bombay, April 25.
The news from Hannah is conflicting regarding the King’s intentions, hut latest advices state that affairs bade fair to continue quiet. Meanwhile every precaution lias been taken by the British Government. Detachments of troops have been sent to various stations, and orders have been issued to military and volunteers to act in the event of a breach. News from Girishk states that all troops in Herat not belonging to that district are deserting to their homes. A strong brigade is moving from Jelhlabad to Gandamack, for health’s sake. Kandahar information states that Russian regiments from Marhad are moving towards the Afghan frontier. In Herat, Cabal, and Caudahar, the regiments are considered untrustworthy. Three sirdars are imprisoned, and the Governor is under open arrest. Mohammed is assembling a force near Dakha, and British reinforcements are moving from Lundi Kotal to act if required. The crops in Bombay Presidency cause much anxiety, and famine is seriously apprehended. All quiet in the Kurram Valley, and with the Kandahar column. Business in Bombay is at a standstill, and an uneasiness still prevails regarding the failures.
