WILLIS-STRRET IMPROVEMENT.

TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sib, —Allow me, through the medium of your widely-circulating paper, to direct the attention of the cityauthorities to the work that is now going on in Willis-street. It is generally understood that the present level in Dixon-street is to be maintained. If this be true, a manifest injustice will be done to the citizens residing in Willis-street, who have in the most uncomplaining manner suffered annoyance and inconvenience while the level of the street was being lowered. And all to no purpose. It was thought that the street would be made so as that persons standing at the Queen’s wharf could look up from one end to the other. But this cannot be done if Dixonstreet is to remain at its present level. And why mar a permanent improvement in the finest street in the town ? Dixon-street west can never be used for general traffic, as it is impossible to get over the clay hill; and Dixonstreet east would be much improved by reducing the level. About 18in. or 2ft. would greatly improve the gradient, and would not in any way interfere with the laying of the gas or water pipes. I trust this will be done ere it be too late. If not, all the good that was anticipated to result from the lowering of the levels will prove abortive. I know that our City Engineer has a good deal to contend with, and that it is impossible to please everybody; but in forming permanent works, the general public good should be studied, and nothing should be allowed to come between it and the great object desired to be attained. Trusting the Mayor and Councillors will give this subject the consideration it deserves, —I am, &c., Pro Bono Publico.
