(REUTER'S TELEGRAMS.J London, January 23. A Conservative candidate has been elected to Parliament for North Norfolk by a large majority. The accountant of the City of Glasgow Bank in his evidence said that he had always prepared accurate balance-sheets, but had altered them subsequently, under the direction of Mr. Stronach, the managing director, for the directors. These alterations enormously underrated the liabilities of the bank. The December San Francisco mails were delivered to-day. Pams, 28th January. The French Minister of Agriculture and Commerce has resigned. St. Petersburg, 23rd January. The completion of the Russo-Turkiah definitive treaty of peace is delayed because Russia insists on the Treaty of Berlin being made subordinate. Bombay, 23rd January. The Ameer of Afghanistan is at present at the north of Afghanistan, close to Turkestan. All was quiet at the front on the 22nd, AUSTRALIAN NEWS. (SPECIAL TO THE PRESS AGENCY,) Sydney, January 24. At the Hongkong fire, 368 houses are a mass of ruins. The gaol was only saved by most strenuous exertions. British insurance companies suffer but little. The Assembly yesternight approved the propriety of introducing a Bill to restrict Chinese immigration. The Siam arrived at Albany yesternight, four days in advance of contract time. Passengers for New Zealand: Dr. Beaver and Mr. and Mrs. Riddiford. The English team are all out for 248. Penn made 66, Ulyett 51; Harris 50. C. Bannerman and Garret commenced the innings of the N.S.W. team. When the stumps were drawn, 20 were up, and no wickets down, Spofforth sprained his wrist and was unable to play. The Chinese Immigration Restriction Bill has been debated in the Assembly. The steamship Normanby arrived from Hongkong yesterday. Adelaide, Friday. Wheat, ss. 3d. Hobakton, Friday. The Canterbury cricketers played a -one innings match in Tasmania. The latter made 87; Canterbury, 80. They were afterwards entertained at a banquet.
