There is no necessity to enter into an argument in regard to the conduct o£ the Colonial Secretary re the charitable aid question in Wellington. Ministers’ paper was set to work to contradict our statement that a number of people were, so far as the Colonial Secretary was concerned, left to starve ; but it has altogether confirmed it. There is just one point which deserves notice. It perhaps ought to be gratifying to hear that the accounts of Mr. Atchison’s charitable expenditure will be paid on the same scale this month as last month ; but it is a statement difficult to believe, seeing that while in December relief was granted by him to the extent of upwards of £4O, he has, under special instructions, so far refrained from spending a single shilling this month. Our contemporary, obedient as he is, should in mercy to the Colonel have refrainedfrom such an absurd statement, because peoples’ eyes are thus at once open to the misrepresentation sought to be palmed off.
