There is considerable go in the sister colony of Victoria. As an instance, —A Ballarat firm have been manufacturing a new kind of engine-packing. On a late occasion they sent Mr. F. Atkinson, a member of the firm, to this colony, to push the sale of their packing. He accompanied the Kotorua ou one of her trips, and succeeded in demonstrating to the satisfaction of Mr. Baird, the chief engineer, that it was good. The latter was so well satisfied that ho gave Mr. Atkinson a letter formally stating that the packing gave every satisfaction, and, we believe, the Union Company have given the firm a considerable order. So much for enterprise.

The returnsof the Australian goldfields, lately published, show that in N. S. Wales during the year there was a falling off in the yield of 30,000 ounces, valued at £112,000. But in Queensland the yield of gold had increased by 3(5,900 ounces. In N. S. Wales the total yield was 97,500 ounces, in Queensland 373,200 ounces. In the latter colony the average yield of gold per individual was 20 oz. 17 dwts., valued at £72 19s. 6d., a totally inadequate remuneration for the labor and hardship enduied and skill employed in the undertaking. We understand that there are about three Chinamen to every European, and under the circumstances, John Chinaman’s lot as a digger need excite no envy.
