WRECK OF THE SCHIEHALLION.

(PER PRESS AGENCY.) The Underwriters’ Association report under date London 13th :—Arrived : Celestial Queen, from Oamaru. The barque Schiehallion, from Auckland to London, hag gone ashore on the Isle of Wight, and has become a total wreck; the cargo is washing ashore. The barque G. B. S., from London to Auckland, has put into Lisbon, partially dismasted. The iron barque Schiehallion left Auckland on the 21st September, commanded by Captain Levaok, and owned by Shaw, Saville, and Co.; has been trading in the various ports of New Zealand for several years. The Star gave the following particulars of her departure:—The vessel has been a long time iu port, but has taken away a full cargo of New Zealand and South Sea Islands produce. The barque Spirit of the Dawn is scarcely well away, and it is expected that there will be a keen contest between the two vessels on the run Home. Much interest is taken in the expected race. The passengers were Messrs. Thomas Smith, William Taylor, George Chapman, Cordelia Chapman, George Frederick Chapman, Mabel Chapman, Mary Storey, Harley Storey, Harry Storey, Ethel Storey, Clara Storey, Kate Storey. The following is the value of her cargo : Kauri gum, £BBIS ; copra, £3200 ; pearl shells, £1450; candlenuts, £7O; ivory nuts, £5 ; cotton, £1768 ; cocoanut oil, £650 ; cotton seed, £2O; wool, £1928 ; manganese, £4OO ; tallow, £1293 ; miscellaneous, £45 ; total, £19,649. Cargo—2oo cases kauri gum, 156 bales cotton, 123 bags cotton seed, 12 casks cotton seed oil, 146 casks cocoanut oil, 146 tons copra, 147 cases pearl shell, 2 1 tons candlenuts; shipped by Owen and Graham, 31 cases pearl shell, shipped by Henderson and Macfarlane. - 2153 cases kauri gum, 129 casks tallow, 105 bales wool, 180 tons manganese, 165 bales cotton, 123 bales cotton seed, 146 casks tallow, 150 bales wool, 180 tons manganese, 165 bales cotton, 123 bags cotton seed, 156 casks cocoanut oil, 5-1- tons and 43 bags candlenuts, 8 bags ivory nuts, 187 tons copra,' 178 cases pearl shells, various shippers. Cargo insured in New Zealand, South British, , and other local offices mostly. In addition to the above passengers there was Susan Chapman, who ran away from her husband. The following particulars are from the Auckland Star of September 20 :—The man who gave the names of Thomas Massey was charged at the Police Court with unlawfully taking the properties and watch and chain belonging to Thos. Chapman, and," in addition, Massey deprived Chapman of his wife, and was about taking her to England by the Schiehallion as Massey and wife. Chapman had paid their passage money as Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Shortly after , their departure from Onehunga, Chapman missed the faithless partner of his bosom, and his bedding, watch and chain, silver spoons, and opera glass. His suspicions were duljr aroused, and as he was aware his professed friend Massey- was a frequent visitor at his house, he gave information to the police that they were off to England together, as Mrs. Chapman had often threatened to leave him. Detective Jeffrey took a boat and went after the ship to go on board. Bound North Head he detected the loving couple in happy communion in. the cabin, congratulating each other on the lucky escape, and projecting plans for future development. On the appearance of Jeffreys the woman fainted iu the arms of Massey. As Massey was leaving the ship he said to Mrs. Chapman you gq.hotne to your sister dear, and as soon as I get out of my trouble I will follow yon, and we will live and love together. Massey is now undergoing two years in gaol.
