The p.s Sampson sailed for West Wanganui at noon. Her berth was taken up by the Sir Isaac Newton, from Sydney, with a cargo of coal. The brigantine arrived on Friday lost, drawing Oft 6in. The Harbor Board having been gazetted for this port, it is not improbable that they may turn their attention at once to dredging the river; and with a serviceable tug boat vessels from 12ft to 14ft draught of water would be able at ail times to trade here, which would meet the requirements of the province for some considerable time to come.

There were seven steamers loft yesterday for different parts of the coast. Tho steamer Easby, for Sydney, sailed yesterday afternoon.

The Jane Douglas and Hula both left last evening (or Foxton. The Wanaka, for Auckland via the Hast Coast, got away yesterday afternoon with a large number of passengers. The brigantine Helen, A. Holmes cleared the Customs yesterday for Newcastle. The steamer Napier, for Blenheim, left last night. The Stormblrd, from Wanganui, is duo hero today. The steamer Arawata, for Melbourne via the South, leaves to-day at 3 p.m. The Wellington, for Plcton and Nelson, sailed yesterday afternoon. She returns here on Wednesday, and leaves the next day for the Manukau. The schooner Albatross hauled in to the breastwork and commenced discharging yesterday. Wo notice that a row of gas lamps is being erected down the centre of the wharf. This will be a great boon to passengers who arrive and depart after dark. There was not a single arrival of any kind yesterday, either sailing vessel or steamer. Such a thing has not happened in Wellington before for a very long time. The ship Hyderabad is still In about the same position. Captain Fraser, however, of the Jane Dousias, is still sanguine that the ship will be got off. On Saturday, owing to the heavy sea that was setting on the beach, it was deemed advisable to. fill the ship with water, to prevent her being driven further on the beach. On Sunday the Glenelg steamed close to the stranded vessel, bat had to return to Kaplti again, as any attempt to do any good was considered useless on account of the heavy sea. She was to have left Kaplti again yesterday morning, to make another attempt.

ilThe Manawatu Herald has the following regarding the race up river between the Manawatu and Hula : "The Manawatu, Hula, and Go-Ahead all came up the river together last night, having left Wellington about the same hour on the previous evening: The two former vessels crossed the bar together, and a most exciting race took place up the river. The Manawatu was rather heavily laden, having a considerable portion of deck cargo, while the Huia, on the other hand, was rather light. Arriving opposite the Putiki cattle wharf the now boat spurted, and bade her companion good-bye, but the old favorite declined to be so summarily shook off, and more than held her own, succeeding in getting first berth at the Corporation wharf.

Through the Argua we hear of a alight mishap which occurred to the excursion steamer Albatross while returning from Frankston the other evening. The Albatross was proceeding up the Yarrn for the purpose of landing h-r passengers at the Queen’s Wharf, and when just below the Yarraville sugarworks she came Into col lslon with the s.s. Arawata. from Now Zealand, which had run ashore on a mud bank. There appeared to have been ample room for the Albatross to pass the Arawata, and although signals were made on board the Arawata to warn the approaching steamer of the danger, the Albatross stood on her course, and the result was that hoc paddle-box struck the stern of the Arawata. The paddle-box of the Albatross was very considerably injured by tho force of the collision, but the wheel escaped with but slight damage, and after a little delay tho Albatross continued her journey, and landed her passengers at tho wharf at about half-past 8 o’clock. There was a good deal of contusion on board both steamers at the time of the collision, but os soon as the exact nature of the accident became known the alarm quickly subsided. The damage occasioned to the stern of the Araw >ta was comparatively slight, but the paddle -box of the Albatross was almost carried away, and the steamer had to be laid up the following morning for repairs.
