The Wallace left Nelson on Tuesday, and on Wednesday morning', when about twenty-five miles N.E. of Stephen Island,, found her paddle shaft injured. The shaft was disconnected, and she tried to proceed with one engine, and afterwards by sail. She got within four miles of Wanganui Heads, and then dropped her anchor and signalled for assistance. The ■Wallace will go back to Nelson for repairs. Kumara, Friday. Some days ago Mr. C. Brown, the editor of the Kumara Times, issued a writ against Father Heunebery for slander, laying damages at £IOOO, but it was not served, in the hope that Father Hennebery woilld retract. Today Mr. Brown’s solicitor received an extraordinary letter from' Father Heunebery, covering ten sheets of paper, threatening that it the action were proceeded with the police would be at Brown’s door. Brown has since instructed bis solicitors to serve the writ at once. ■ Hokitika, Friday. The jury in Eyan’s case have been locked up since five o’clock, and there appears no likelihood of an agreement. Nelson, Friday. The census returns for the city of Nelson show—Males, 3380 ; females, 3482 ; total, 6862. In 1874 the total was 5860. Christchurch, Friday. The receipts of the Canterbury Board of Education for 1877 were £75,100, and expenditure £58,963. , A woolshed on the New Zealand and Australian Land Company’s run, in the Rakaia District, was destroyed by fire yesterday.
