The City Council have agreed to employ hand instead of machine labor, for breaking metal.

The Rifle Association have decided to hold the annual prize shooting at the latter end of January, instead of, as hitherto, at Easter. A liberal programme will be issued. At a meeting of the Jockey Club last night it was resolved that the Autumn race meeting should be held on 17th and 18th April. Nominations for the Great Autumn Handicap are to be made on 7th February, and general entries on 7th April. On the first day, the Leger, Champagne, and Cavalry Stakes, the Autumn Handicap, and Hack Race are to be run ; on the second day a Steeplechase Handicap, Plying Stakes, Selling Race, Easter Holidays, and Consolation Races. Donedin, Thursday.

The enquiry as to the alleged ill-treatment of a girl at the Industrial] Home closed yesterday. Decision is deferred. The evidence shows that she was a great trial to the Superintendent ; that she was kindly treated ; and that she was fastened up for fear of her doing injury to herself. The fat cattle show fixed for the 19th December is expected to be the best ever held here.

The house of a settler at Longbush has been destroyed by fire. He was insured in the Norwich Union Company for £IOO. Malignant fever has carried off two children in one house. Four others are now down with it in the same house.

Andrew Gainter, charged with arson, has been committed for trial.

In the case of malignant scarlet fever authority was given by the Resident Magistrate to remove the children to the fever hospital, but their father threatened to shoot any one who attempted their removal. The annual meeting of the Mosgiel Woollen Company was held to-day. The available balance was shown to be £3607, which has been carried forward to clear off the overdraft.
