The Thunderer has been brought alongside the dockyard at Portsmouth, and her easy approach from the shore makes her as attractive as she has ever been.since the memorable 14th July. Now that the scientific staff have finished their examination, orders have been received for the general work of completion for the pennant to be resumed, but nothing definite has yet been heard as to the construction of a new boiler, as it will be necessary to open her decks to get out the boiler, and the ship can be worked with the remaining boilers. In all probability she will complete her commission without foremost boiler in after-stokehole. There is at present in the Naas Workhouse Infirmary an old man, whose history is worth recording. His name is William Murphy, late sergeant in the 42nd Highlanders. He was born in Glasgow in 1795, and served for 22 years in his regiment, and was in several of the Peninsular engagements, under the Duke of Wellington, including Salamanca, Bada-jos, and Toulouse. He was also at Waterloo, and was discharged at Perth in 1830. Since 1830 Murphy has been in receipt of Is. sd. per day pension. Por upwards of 15 years he has been either an inmate of Carlow Lunatic Asylum or Naas Workhouse. His support has been paid for by the Paymaster of Pensioners. If no claimant turns up a considerable sum will revert to the Crown at his death, as he had no children.
