CRICKET.

STAR C.C. V. WELLINGTON C.C. The annual match between the above clubs took place on Saturday on the Basin Beserve; the wickets being pitched at one o clock, but in consequence of the inclemency of the weather play was discontinued before the Wellington Club had completed their first innings. Knapp (captain of the Wellingtonians) having won the toss, took hia team into the field. Mason and Gouge going to the wickets to the bowling _ot Annitage and Knapp, the former commencing from the south end. Both batsmen played steadily and well. Gouge occasionally getting the ball away to leg.. In Armitage s third over he clean bowled Mason, with a breakback. Blacklock took the vacant wicket, but after scoring ode succumbed to the same bowler. Lockett, next man, did not survive long, being smartly caught at the wickets by Edmunds. I. J. Salmon followed, and between him and Gouge the fielders were compelled to indulge in a little leather-hunting for some time. Gouge was eventually caught by Horwood off Knapp, and Bussell, who followed him, was bowled without scoring, which let in Garwood. Another stand was made by the batsmen, until Salmon after scoring eight was nicely, caught at the wicket by Edmunds. J. A. Salmon followed, but was soon bowled by Bryce, who had gone on at the south eud. The innings closed by Bond being bowled by Annitage, Thornhill caught and bowled by Bryce, and Garwood smartly taken in the slips by Annitage off Bryce. The total result was 65. Afterau interval of ten minutes Kennedy and Speed came to the wickets on behalf of the Wellington Club, facing the bowling of Garwood and J. A. Salmon, the former commencing from the north end. Kennedy after scoring one was foolishly run out, and soon after Garwood look Speed’s leg stump clean out of the ground. Kennett and Knapp then got together, and here a long stand was made, Kennett driving both bowlers all over the field. About half-past four the rain began to come down in real earnest, and as there was apparently no chance of the weather clearing it was decided to draw the stumps, the score standing at 40 for the loss of two wickets.
