' The Pacific Mail Company's steamer City of New York, Captain Caverly, from Southern ports, arrived here yesterday, at 4.50 a.m. She left Port Chalmers at 2.30 p.m; on the 15th inst., and arrived at Lyttelton at 7 a.m. on the 16th ; sailed again at 2 p.m., and arrived here as above, the vessel having come up from Lyttelton under easy steam so as to reach this port at daylight. All yesterday she was engaged in taking in coal, provisions, etc., till 3.15 p.m., when she steamed out of the harbor for Napier. Auckland, Kandavau, Honolulu, and San Francisco, taking with her the outward English and American mails. The s.s. Murmy arrived In harbor yesterday at • 10 a.m., after a stormy passage of nearly forty-two hours from Nelson. She left there at 4.30 p.m. on the ISihjnst., and after coming through the French Pass experienced the full force of the S.E. gale. It was a very heavy one, and the steamer was compelled after three attempts to round Cape Jackson to take shelter in Oyster Bay, Tory Channel, where it was found necessary to ride with two anchors down. Lay there till 4 o'clock yesterday morning, when the wind decreased in violence, and the vessel was enabled to proceed on her voyage, arriving here as above. Experienced a heavy sea across the Strait from Tory Channel. -The Murray brought a full cargo of wool and coal, and about 25 passengers. She will sail for Nelson dfid the West Coast this evening at 6 o'clock. The Union Company's steamer Wellington, Captain Floyd, from the Southern ports, arrived here yesterday at 9.45 a.m. She left Port Chalmers at 12.30 p.m. on the 15th. and arrived at Lyttelton at 9 a.m. on the 16th; sailed that afternoon at 3.30 p.m,, and arrived,here as above. Experienced southerly wind, with fine weather, throughout the passage. The Wellington sailed for Northern ports at 12 o’clock last night. - The s.s. Napier arrived here yesterday at 11 a.m. from Foxton. She left there at 6.30 a.m. on the 15th, and bad light southerly wind up to Kapitl, where the first of the S.E. gale was experienced, until arrival off Mana, whereit blew very heavy, and Porirua Bay had tobe made for shelter, arriving at 8 a.m. on Thursday morning: "Got under way again at 5 o'clock yester- • day morning, 'and, on proceeding outside, the wind wm found to have decreased to a light breeze; but it had left a high tumbling sea behind it. The Napier -will sail for Foxton this evening. Besides the taking out of the mainmast of the s.s. . gtella, which we noticed yesterday, gangways are being cut on either side aft, and the engines are receiving a thorough overhaul, while other necessary repairs are being effected to her to make her fit for the lighthouse work- * .
