TELEGRAPHIC NEWS.

(PER PRESS AGENCY.) Auckland, Thursday

The schooner Tawera has been wrecked. The following report of the occurrence is to hand :—The Maoris on Tuesday found a large schooner off Sandy Beach, about twelve or fourteen miles north of the North Head of Kaipara Harbor. She was dismasted, her decks were clean swept, and the boat lashed on deck. No signs of the crew were visible on board or on shore. They had no doubt she was the Tawera, which had left Foxton some time previously in ballast for Kaipara, intending to load at the Aratapu mill for Lyttelton. The Tawera was owned by F. Archard, who a' short time past sold her to Mr. Bailey, delivery to take place after her present charter. The sale is vitiated by the accident. The Tawera was a schooner of fifty-five tons register, and was insured for £BOO in the New Zealand Insurance office. Captain Church was in command when she left Foxton. With regard to the crew being missing, it is possible they might have effected an escape, though they were not seen by the natives who brought the news to Aratapu. The wife of Captain Church is waiting at the pilot station at Kaipara, in hopes that her husband will return. Father Boibeux’s funeral to-day was very largely attended. Patea, Thursday, William Cowern submitted the township of Normauby at Kitemara, Patea district, to auction yesterday, on behalf of Captain Blacke. The bidding for fancy sections was keen, realising good prices. Forty sections sold at an average rate of £l3 per quarter acre. All sold at satisfactory prices. The confiscated land sale held to day was a great success, the attendance was large, and among the competitors was a fair sprinkling of visitors from the other provinces. The bidding for the suburban sections on the east bank of the Patea River, opposite the town of Carlyle, was particularly brisk. This land is of a swampy character, and the sections were put up at £3 per acre, and realised from £5 to £34 per acre, the purchasers being principally local. The allotments in the Okutuku district were not so keenly contested for, but the allotments sold realised a considerable advance on the upset price, the top figure being £G per acre. All the allotments offered were sold with the exception of about twelve. The character of the land was said to be rugged and thickly timbered. The total amount realised was £13,500. Wanganui, Thursday, Bishop Redwood lauded from the Manawalu last night, and was received by a large crowd on the wharf, and followed to the Catholic Church, when an address of welcome was presented. He replied in terms similar to those used at other places. The reception was exceedingly complimentary. Grahamstown, Thursday. The Tairua Company’s four-stamper battery started yesterday. The Caledonian is getting rich specimens daily from the Cure reef. A miner was seriously injured last night by the premature explosion of a blast. One arm was shattered, the face much burnt, and other injuries sustained.
