THORNDON WARD.

A meeting of the friends of ' Mr. J. M. Cleland was held 'at the Princess Hotel last evening. , About thirty-five persons were present.. Mr. Anderson was in,the chair, and stated that : a deputation had waited on Mr. Cleland asking him ■to stand as a ' candidate for the; representation of the ward. He (the chairman) had every confidence in Mr. Cleland 1 s ability and honesty of purpose ' to represent their interests in the Council, and he was sure that they all felt with him that the taxes levied in the ward were more than sufficient to keep the streets in good repair, though they were at present in a most disgraceful state. He had great pleasure in calling on Mr. Cleland to address the meeting. Mi\ Cleland stated that he would, if elected as their representative, work for their interests. He found from information supplied to him that the ratepayers of Thorndon contributed £I4OO per year to the city rates, while less than half that sum would suffice to put and keep the streets in repair. He also was of opinion that a five per cent, water rate was ample for the purpose, and he should, if elected, object to a liigher rate being made. With regard to sewerage, he was of opinion that money should be borrowed to carry out a most complete sewerage, and to form the streets which existed only on the map. Should anything crop up which interfered materially with their interests, he should call them together and take their opinions on the matter. Mr. Howe proposed, and Mr. Clark seconded, that Mr. Cleland was a fit and proper person to represent the ward, which was carried unanimously. The meeting resolved itself into a committee, to ensure, his election. A vote of thanks to the chairman closed the proceedings.
