[Press Telegraph Agency.] Auckland, Saturday. The races to-day were attended by about 2000 persons ; not so many as were expected. The events generally were well contested. The Trial Stakes were won by Mr. Delamaiu’s The Belle, 1 ; Parawhenua, 2 ; Sir Charles, 3. The Railway Plate by Ngaro, 1 ; The Belle, 2. For the Auckland Cup Yatterina was a hot favorite, but contrary to expectation Templeton won; Toi, 2 ; Yatterina, 3. Midsummer Handicap Never Miss, 1 ; Jeu, 2; Kingfisher, 3. In the finish of this race Kingfisher’s rider was thrown and badly hurt. The foot racing at Bllerslio Gardens was but thinly attended. The ship Assaye from London, with immigrants, all well, has arrived after a long and tedious passage. Tbawajiuig, Saturday. Great numbers. of natiyos have assembled here, and at Alexandra, since yesterday, for the races. The King’s son, with Major Te Wheoro,. arrived on Thursday at Alexandra, but was obliged to return, Sophia, Tawhiao’s sister, being dangerously ill. All the horses for the races now here are busy preparing. The weather is intensely hot. 4 p.m. Hurdle Race—Rutherford’s Tommy Dodd, 1 ; Taylor’s Stockman, 2. Maiden Plate— Bond’s Don, 1 ; Roche’s Nelly, 2 ; McCarthy’s Lanty, 3 ; Bond’s Lightfoot. 4. A protest was entered against Lanty. Awamutu Cup— Bond’s Don, 1 ; Reynolds’ Sultan, 2. Grahamstown, Saturday. The Queen of Beauty shareholders divided £2BOO 12s. 3d., equal to £4OO Is. 9d. per share, from their last magnificent crushing. The shareholders also voted gratuities to the mine and battery managers, and other employes. The day has been observed as a general holiday. Races took place on the Parawai course, and were the principal attraction. The

contests for the different events were confined to local horses, and therefore possess little general interest. The sports will be continued on Monday, which will also be observed as a holiday by the tradesmen after eleven o’clock. Dunedin, Friday. A fire broke out in the baking-room of the shop of Murray, the confectioner, last night, from spontaneous combustion, caused by the excessive heat. The damage done is estimated at £IOO, which is covered by insurance. New Plymouth, Friday. The Provincial Council is summoned to meet on the 12th of January. Mastekton, Friday. A man named Peterson, a Dane, has been found dead in the bush near this place, hanging to a tree by a small piece of twine. He had apparently been dead some hours when he was discovered. Nelson, Saturday. The cricket match between the provinces of Marlborough and Nelson took place to-day. The weather was beautiful. Marlborough went first to the wickets, and scored 70. In their second innings they made 96. Nelson made 68 in their first innings, and had scored 38 in their second innings, when the stumps were drawn. Nelson had still five wickets to go down.
