NATIVE LETTER FROM THE NGATIPAOA. (From the Press, July 22, 1865.)
W,.ip..pa, Aockhnrf, June 9. 1865. Friend FitzGsraM: — Salutations. Turn towards roe and bear my speech-— i gooi speech. My heart is looking at thfl dignity of the word of Governor G ey, in hio proclamation Thi» word:— l will protect the people lrbo si< peaceably — who rebel not. The Second: — I will protect thpm in tbp possession of their land* and their efftcts. Stop here Now ! hsar the boundaries of the confiscated land. Beginning wiih Tau, io the Wuiroi, stretching to Tetihi, of Wbarek-wa, on to Toahuorue, thence to Maispu, to Pukorokoro, to Rotaro», to Hapau Kobi, thence onward, onward, onward. Hear, then. The reason of the confiscation of the above territory is for the punishment oi thesina of Waikato. Is this right according to the law ? Hear. The above land doei not beloag only to the fighting Maoriei, but part of it to the non-combatants. Now, to my mind this ii wrong. To my mind it is light to ttke only what belong* to the hostile party. But the other way, it may be, ia right according to yor principles. Torny thought, if a man sin, let bimbe arrested ; be will not be condemned by ihe mere arre«t. be will be judged according to the law ; if the la* convicts, he i» sentenced. To m£ mind, this is right. In like manner, if a dispute arise respecting land, let it be decided by the law ; if the law confiictte, it is right to do so. Now, here is some land ; some go to fi=fbt, others sit quietly; let the land theti be divided ; let the iavr do if. Again, bere is some land. The many went to fight"; only one remained in peacr. Now, out ol that land let the law do justice to that one man. This is all. I wish you to consider it. It m y be nay thought is sn error. From your friend, Wiremtj Hobte (William Jowett), and all the Nagatipaoa. — Press.
