. Wellington, November 17, 1854. f* ENTLEMEN,— I have, on several occasions, been requested to allow myself i to be nominated as a candidate for a seat in the Provincial Council of this Province, but I have always declined to accede to those requests because the attendance during the sittings of Council necessarily occupies a great part of the time of its members to the serious neglect of , their own private business. ! The address, however, which has this day been presented to me, requesting that I will permit myself to be nominated as a candidate to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Mr. George Moore, one of the representatives of the City of Wellington in the Provincial Council, is so numerously and respectably signed by electors of various shades of political opinions, that I consider it my duty at once to comply with your request. Should I be elected I will give my cordial support to all measures that I may deem beneficial to the general interests of the Province, whether those measures be introduced into the Council by the Government or by private members ; and on the other hand, I .will give the most strenuous opposition to any measures that I may deem prejudicial to the good of the Province. I will also advocate strict economy in the appropriation of the public revenue, consistently i with the maintenance of due efficiency in every department of the Government. I am, 'Gentlemen, Your most obedient servant WM. HICKSON. To Edward Daniell T F T p W.B.Rhodes j Es^ J^ And the other Gentlemen who ( signed the address.
