Notice. — To masters of vessel* bound from San Francisco to Australia, or from Australia to San Franciico. — I give notice to all matters of Teisels going through the Friendly Islands that the Quiroie Island is not laid down in the charts in its right position, nor is it given in Norrie's Epitome correctly. On Saturday, 16th October, 1852, at noon, I was in latitude lOdeg. 45min. South, longitude 170 deg.37 mm. 30sec. West, which placed me five miles to the South and thirty-one miles to the Westward of Quirose Island. After steering South-west half West from noon, at 3h. 30min. I obserred Quirose Island bearing S.S.W. I then took observations, and found this Island to be in latitude lOdeg

58min. South, and longitude 171deg. I6min. Weit. I would, therefore, adrise all master! when going this coute, on approaching this Island, to keep a good look out for it, as this Island is low and cannot be seen more than fire miles off ; there is a long sand spit running off the East and West end, and the sea breaks heary. There are natives on this Island. At sh. 30m., two canoes came off to me with fish and cocoa nuts, which 1 got in exchange for tobacco ; the natiTei of this Island are Tery large, and appeared to be rcry friendly. . Charles Cook, Master. Brig Exchange, from San Francisco to Melbourne. Port Phillip.
