On Thursday evening the Sergeants of the 65dh Regt. celebrated her Majesty's birt h day by a banquet, to which several of their friends and acquaintances among the inhabitants of Wellington were invited guests. A large room in the ordnance store at the head of the Bay was used for the occasion, and was very tastefully decorated with pictures, military trophies, and evergreens ; on different parts of the ceiling were arranged stars of swords and bayonets which had a striking effect. A portrait of her gracious Majesty occupied the post of honor ; on the right was suspended a portait of the Duke, the hero of a hundred fights, on the left was placed the Royal Tiger, the emblem of the Regiment. A portrait of the late commanding officer of the Regiment also occupied a conspicuous position. The tables were ranged round three sides of the room, and groaned under the good cheer that had been provided. The whole of the arrangements, which were in first-rate style, were under the direction of the Drum-Major of the Regiment, and reflected very great credit on his taste and good management. Upwards of a hundred guests sat down to dinner. Previous to the dinner, his Excellency the Lieutenant- Governor, accompanied by Lieut.-Col. Gold and several officers of the Regiment, Capt. Stokes, R.N., and other gentlemen, entered the room as visitors, and seemed greatly pleased with the excellent arrangements that had been made. His Excellency proposed the health of the Queen, which was drank standing ; and Col. Gold proposed the health of the Serjeants of the Regiment. The Serjeants then drank the health of Lieut.-Col. Gold with all the honours, and their hearty and prolonged cheers bore testimony to the sincere respect they entertained for their commanding officer. His Excellency and the other visitors having retired, the Serjeants and their guests sat down to dinner, the Serjeant- Major presiding on the occasion, and the evening's convivialities were prolonged to a late hour, evincing the mutual good will and kindly feelings which unite in one common bond of loyalty and good-fellowship the military and the inhabitants of this settlement.
